Custom Made Orthotics

The foundation of the body is the foot.  If the foot is not in its correct position, the body is not fully supported.

A foot orthotic is a device that is worn inside your shoes or sandals to help compensate for the forces placed on the foot caused by hard surfaces or abnormality of the foot and ankle.  An orthotic is designed to correct the anatomy of a foot problem or accommodate and support the foot’s alignment issues.

Today many people experience a variety of foot problems that affect their balance and everyday lives. They not only have pain or discomfort in their feet when they walk, run or stand but they also have problems with their knees, hips, lower back, shoulders and neck.

Orthotics can helpFoot and ankle problems can also be caused by:

  • Genetics
  • Trauma
  • Poorly made footwear.
  • Untreated foot problems
  • Not tying up shoe laces.
  • Standing and walking on hard surfaces without proper foot-care
  • Inappropriate footwear such as high heels, rubber thongs, Ugg boots and pointed toed shoes.

An Orthotic Device helps remedy:

  • Claw toes. Toes that bend upward from the joints at the ball of the foot, and often protrude through footwear
  • Pronation of the foot and ankle. The inward roll of the foot and arch.
  • Bunion.
  • Flat feet. A fallen arch is when the arch of the foot collapses rolling inward.
  • Supination of the foot and ankle. The outward roll of the foot, often occurring when a person appears bow-legged.
  • Plantar Fasciitis. Inflammation of the tendon from the base of the heel bone to behind the big toe commonly seen in collapsed arches.
  • Heel spurs. A bony projection that forms on the base of the heel bone causing a strain of plantar fascia most commonly seen in pronation.
  • Dropped Metatarsal bones. A condition wherein one of the metatarsal bones (ball of the foot) is lower than the rest.

Mark Song makes orthotic devices that are customised to a person’s individual foot problem. No two feet are the same, not even your own and only individual treatment can fully support and correct a foot problem.

Foot Assessments

Orthotics from ChiropractorPart of Mark's assessment of your foot problem is done using a weight bearing impression.  This technique shows where the foot is not in alignment and where the pressure of your body weight is not balanced.

The orthotic is then customised according the misalignment using a range of flexible materials and cork base.  The majority of orthotics includes an arch support, metatarsal support and heel support.

Why Adjustable Orthotics?

A chronic (long standing) foot problem, or a child’s foot problem, cannot be treated by only one customization of an orthotic device.  The muscles and bones of the foot require changes created over time to prevent pain or straining the foot and body posture.  This is what makes Mark so successful in his orthotic treatments and why he has specialised in using materials that make an orthotic adjustable. Mark uses semi flexible cork, various types of rubber (EVA) materials & leather in his orthotic devices to enable him to continue to add, reshape or adjust an orthotic and treat the foot problem long term.  This method is both anatomically effective and cost effective for the client. Many people have experienced wearing non adjustable orthotics made of hard plastic and non flexible materials.  These do not encourage the muscles of the foot and ankle to become stronger.  These types of orthotics are only designed to accommodate symptoms of the problem rather than to correct it.

Orthotics vary greatly in size and shape depending on your needs:

Adding different materials over a period of time sees the orthotic device change its shape so it can continue to correct foot alignment and body posture and allow normal physical activity without pain or strain.
